Ingredients

Scale

Crust and Crumble

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Apple Filling

  • 3 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples (about 3 medium)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Topping

  • 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper for easy removal of the bars.
  2. Make the Crust Mixture: In a large bowl, combine melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir these ingredients together until well mixed.
  3. Add Flour: Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the butter mixture and stir until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  4. Press Base Layer: Take about two-thirds of the crumbly mixture and press it evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form the crust.
  5. Prepare Apple Filling: In a separate bowl, toss the peeled and thinly sliced apples with ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg until evenly coated.
  6. Assemble Filling: Spread the seasoned apple mixture evenly on top of the crust layer in the baking pan.
  7. Add Caramel Sauce: Drizzle the salted caramel sauce evenly over the apple layer for a rich, sweet flavor.
  8. Add Crumble Topping: Sprinkle the remaining one-third of the crumb mixture over the caramel-drizzled apples to create the crumble topping.
  9. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  10. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let the bars cool completely in the pan to allow them to set. Once cooled, lift bars out using the parchment paper and cut into squares to serve.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a nice balance of sweetness and acidity.
  • If salted caramel sauce is not available, you can use regular caramel sauce and sprinkle lightly with sea salt.
  • Allow bars to cool fully before cutting to prevent crumbling.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free baking flour blend.
