For the Patties
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons A1 steak sauce
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon homemade steak seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
For the Gravy
- 1 tablespoon butter (for cooking patties)
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, sliced thin
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ cups beef broth (or stock)
- Salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste
- 8 oz sliced baby Bella mushrooms
- Mix Patties: In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, egg, panko breadcrumbs, A1 steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, steak seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well with hands or gloves until ingredients are evenly incorporated. Form the mixture into four round patties roughly ¾ to 1 inch thick.
- Cook Patties: Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the patties and cook for 5 minutes on each side or until cooked through. Remove patties and place on a plate, covering with foil or a lid to keep warm.
- Prepare Pan for Gravy: If there is excess grease left from cooking, spoon out all but about 1 tablespoon. Do not clean the skillet; keep the drippings for flavor in the gravy.
- Sauté Onions: Add 3 tablespoons butter to the skillet. Scrape the bottom to loosen browned bits, then add the sliced onions. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are translucent.
- Add Flour: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well to coat. Cook for about 2 minutes until the flour is lightly browned to develop flavor.
- Add Broth: Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Continue cooking for 3 to 4 minutes until the gravy starts to thicken. Season with salt and freshly cracked pepper, adjusting to taste.
- Simmer with Mushrooms and Patties: Add the sliced mushrooms and return the cooked patties to the skillet. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 7 to 10 minutes until the mushrooms are tender and gravy thickens further.
- Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks hot with mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables. Warm bread is recommended for savoring the rich gravy.
Notes
- Use homemade steak seasoning or substitute with 1 tsp each of salt, pepper, paprika, and dried herbs if unavailable.
- For a thicker gravy, allow it to simmer longer or add a slurry of flour and water.
- Adjust seasoning in the gravy last to suit your taste preferences.
- Using fresh mushrooms enhances texture and flavor but canned mushrooms can be substituted in a pinch.
- Make sure not to overcook the patties to keep them juicy.
